What Im Reading

Since 2020 i’ve rekindled my passion for reading and picked up kindle and goodreads. I was always an avid reader growing up and through college, but since entering the workforce I invested my time in other things i.e. work and entertainment.

Being away from reading, I felt like I missed out on many rich books out there and in particularly classics. I figured I’d jump into reading several different classic books:

  • The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
  • The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams
  • The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

Classics really are great, I mean that’s why they are the classics! There is so many books out there in the world and you only have so much time in ones life to read, so I opted to try and read from highly coveted and recommended lists1. Don’t get me wrong some of the reads weren’t my cup of tea, Candide and One Hundred Years of Solitude, but I could at least appreciate the quality.

More recently I’ve been dabling in some of the greatest sci fi books out there like Foundation Series by Isaac Asimov and Dune by Frank Herbert. These have become some of my favorite books with incredible rich universes and simple but elegant writing styles. Its also been a treat as a reader to get some amazing TV shows and movies based on these franchises.

Since I’ve been enjoying fantasy, this year I have a lofty goal to begin reading through Brandon Sanderson’s cosmere. Its quite a long list of books and there are varying discussions on reading order2, but settled on a modified publication order3 recommended on reddit.

So far i’ve made it through Mistborn trilogy, Elantris, and Warbreaker and begun the epic fantasy Stormlight archive series with The Way of Kings. With each book I can definitely see Sanderson’s writing get more and more refined, but what has stayed consistent is the characters and how you can relate to them and feel like you are along for the journey.

I might include a post in the future of some of my favorite reads and maybe a deeper dive on some.

  1. There are many different lists out there published by outlets like NYT and NPR, but I’d also recommend https://thegreatestbooks.org/

  2. Sanderson has published his own recommended order https://www.brandonsanderson.com/pages/where-do-i-start

  3. https://www.reddit.com/r/Cosmere/wiki/order/2/
